Dogs keep us company. They fetch the paper and protect our homes. They see for the blind and hear for the deaf. They predict seizures and detect cancer. They find lost children and sniff out bombs. They play Frisbee and fetch with us. They teach us patience. They warm our feet and touch our hearts.

Low Gap Dog Park Q&A

What is a dog park?
A community dog park is a fenced area designated for the off-lease use of residents and visitors who wish to exercise their dogs safely and allow them to socialize with other dogs. It offers shade, benches, water and disposal facilities for dog waste.

What are the community benefits?
  • A dedicated dog park promotes responsible dog ownership. It reinforces the efforts of local professionals, retailers, organizations, and others who promote animal welfare.
  • Dogs that get plenty of exercise and socialization are good dog citizens and neighbors. Dogs that get plenty of exercise are happier and healther than dogs that don't get a chance to run and play. Exercised dogs are less likely to bark excessively, destroy property, and annoy neighbors and passers-by.
  • A dog park will bring together dogs and dog owners in neutral territory. Dog owners have a place to meet other dog lovers and form new friendships.
  • A dog park offers elderly and disabled owners with an accessible place to exercise their companions. And a dog park provides a tool for realistic enforcement of dog control laws.
What is the purpose of the Low Gap Dog Park?
  • To promote the health and welfare of our community's dogs by establishing an off-leash dog-park where well-mannered canine citizens may exercise and play in a clean and safe environment without endangering or annoying people, property or wildlife.
  • To develop an attractive and well-maintained fenced-in space for dog lovers and friends who uphold the park's rules.
  • To partner with the City of Ukiah and the County of Mendocino to develop a park that will satisfy the needs of dog-owners and non-dog owners alike.
The City of Ukiah and the County of Mendocino have agreed to set aside an area of land at Low Gap Park as an off-leash dog park. This location is remote from any residential area and offers ample parking. It's up to the community to fund development of the site.
The Low Gap Dog Park will be designed with a concern for the environment, dog park users, and visitors to Low Gap Park.

Funding Still Needed For Dog Park

March 1, 2009: The state of the economy affects everything, including fundraising for the planned dog park at Low Gap Park. We thought we were approaching enough money to fence the area, but it now appears that the county will require $20,000 in our account before moving forward. More fundraisers will be required to reach that goal.

Dam Dog Walks will resume on April 19 at 8:45 a.m. and continue each Sunday after. You and your dog can visit with friends on a walk across the dam. Bring water for you and your dog. All dogs must be leashed. Meet in the upper parking lot near the dam entrance at the end of Mendocino Drive. Fun prizes can be won in a raffle benefitting the Low Gap Dog Park. Come join the fun. If you have something to donate to the raffle, call Sallie at 463-3647.

Plans are also forming for a Low Gap Dog Park Yard Sale. If you have items in good shape to donate to the sale, call Sallie at 463-3647. The plan is to hold the sale on Saturday, May 30, probably at Observatory Park. Volunteers will be needed to move, price, and sell items.
