Low Gap Dog Park Q&A
What is a dog park?
A community dog park is a fenced area designated for the off-lease use
of residents and visitors who wish to exercise their dogs safely and
allow them to socialize with other dogs. It offers shade, benches,
water and disposal facilities for dog waste.
What are the community benefits?
- A dedicated dog park promotes responsible dog ownership. It
reinforces the efforts of local professionals, retailers,
organizations, and others who promote animal welfare.
- Dogs that get plenty of exercise and socialization are good
dog citizens and neighbors. Dogs that get plenty of exercise are
happier and healther than dogs that don't get a chance to run and play.
Exercised dogs are less likely to bark excessively, destroy property,
and annoy neighbors and passers-by.
- A dog park will bring together dogs and dog owners in
neutral territory. Dog owners have a place to meet other dog lovers and
form new friendships.
- A dog park offers elderly and disabled owners with an
accessible place to exercise their companions. And a dog park provides
a tool for realistic enforcement of dog control laws.
What is the purpose of the Low Gap Dog Park?
- To promote the health and
welfare of our community's dogs by establishing an off-leash dog-park
where well-mannered canine citizens may exercise and play in a clean
and safe environment without endangering or annoying people, property
or wildlife.
- To develop an attractive and well-maintained fenced-in space for dog lovers and friends who uphold the park's rules.
- To partner with the City
of Ukiah and the County of Mendocino to develop a park that will
satisfy the needs of dog-owners and non-dog owners alike.
The City of Ukiah and the County of Mendocino have agreed to set
aside an area of land at Low Gap Park as an off-leash dog park. This
location is remote from any residential area and offers ample parking.
It's up to the community to fund development of the site.
The Low Gap Dog Park will be designed with a concern for the environment, dog park users, and visitors to Low Gap Park.

Dog Park Receives $8,000 in Donations!
May 21, 2008
 Plans
for the Low Gap Dog Park are moving quickly ahead. In just three
months, donations have exceeded $8,000 from inividuals, groups, and
Mendocino County. Plans are now going forward for fencing a 1+ acre
site at "the old ball field" in Low Gap Park, expected to be completed
by the end of 2008. As planned, the park will have two areas: one for
larger dogs and a separate area for smaller and shy dogs. Water and
seating will be available on-site. A double-entry gate will be built
for security. Future plans call for agility and other play equipment
for dogs and owners.
Low Gap Dog Park is a joint effort of the City of Ukiah,
Mendocino County, and the Low Gap Dog Park Committee. It is the first
public dog park in inland Mendocino County. There currently are
two in Ft. Bragg and a dog park planned for the village of Mendocino.
According to DogFancy
magazine, more than 1,000 dog parks have opened since the first one was
established in Berkeley, CA, in 1979. Dog parks offer an opportunity
for responsible owners to safely socialize and exercise their dogs
off-leash.
City Dog Park Effort Looking for Support
by Zack Sampsel/ Ukiah Daily Journal
Feb. 21, 2008
With support from the city, county and community, man's best friend will have more fenced-in room to run along Low Gap Road.
Previously, the city and county agreed to set aside an area of land at
Low Gap Park as a leash-free dog park. With the land set aside, the Low
Gap Dog Park Committee began phase one of preparing, planning and
fencing in the leash-free oasis, which will be secluded from
residential areas and feature on-site parking.
The first phase includes raising funds for fencing to create sepaate
small and large dog areas. Once the area is safely fenced and in use,
further fundraising is expected to add landscaping, trees and benches.
According to the Low Gap Dog Park Web site, the park will be designed
with a concern for the environment, dog park users, and visitors to Low
Gap Park.
People interested can make a tax-deductible donation in your name, you
favorite pet's name, or your business. Make checks payable to: City of
Ukiah - Dog Park Project Trust. Donations may be mailed or delivered
